Stylesheet Instructions - for the Maryland Toolkit Stylesheet

A stylesheet enables you to rapidly create unique symbology for Practice and Resource Inventory Layers.

Download and Unzip Files

The stylesheet.zip file contains the following files:

  • Toolkit_MD.style
  • style_legend.pdf
  • stylesheet_instructions.pdf

The stylesheet.zip file can be downloaded below. Double-click on the stylesheet.zip file and click the Extract button to extract the contents to a folder (Ex. C:\Toolkit_Accessories). Browse to the newly unzipped stylesheet and follow the instructions below.

Loading the NRCS Toolkit Stylesheet

  • Copy the file Toolkit_MD.style
  • Paste the file to the location C:\ArcGIS\arcexe83\bin\Styles

Symbolize Features Using a Style

Features must be attributed before adjusting the symbology. For Resource inventory layers, you must use the exact wording used in the style_legend.doc. Once you are finished attributing your layer, follow the steps below:

  • Double-click on the practice layer or resource_inventory layer name in the Table of Contents (TOC).
  • Click on the Symbology tab in the layer Properties window.
  • In the Show window, click on Categories. Left click on Match to symbols in a style.
  • Use the pull down menu under the Value Field. If you symbolizing the practice layer, select Practice Name. If you are symbolizing the resource_inventory layer, select Linetype or Pointtype.
  • Use the pull down menu under Match to symbols in a style and select Toolkit_MD.style.
  • Click the Match symbols button.
  • To change any of the stylesheet symbols, double-click on the symbol in the Symbol Column for a feature.
    • Tip: Before producing a map, uncheck the All Other Values box.
    • Tip: In the Label Column, a bold text header will be displayed (e.g. Practice Name). Click on the bolded label and delete/backspace over the header.
  • When complete, click the OK button to close the Layer Properties Window.

Each time you edit and attribute new features, you will need to repeat the steps above to match your new features to a symbol style.
