Getting the Most from a Resource Inventory Layer

Last Modified: 07/29/2008

Three steps to Setup, Attribute and Symbolize a Resource_Inventory layer.

  1. Create the Resource Inventory Layer
    • Open your Toolkit Map document and add your plan ("Cyber Farmer" button).
    • Click on the New Layer button ("Star").
    • Click on a Resource Inventory feature type (point, line or polygon). Click OK.
    • Digitize your features, then stop editing and save.

*Before creating additional Resource Inventory layers of the same feature type, see below.

  1. Attribute the Resource Inventory Layer
    • Click the Attribute button.
    • Select the Resource Inventory layer (point, line or polygon).
    • Click on the first feature to attribute.
    • Click in the Type window. Enter a name for your feature, and then click Apply. In order to utilize a Stylesheet, enter a name exactly as it appears on the Style Legend - refer to the Stylesheet Instructions.
    • Attribute all features as described above, and click on OK to close the Attribute window.
  2. Assign Symbology to the Resource Inventory Layer using the Toolkit Stylesheet
The NRCS Toolkit MD.style file must be loaded on your computer as described in the Stylesheet Instructions document.
    • Double-click on the Resource Inventory layer name in the Table of Contents (TOC).
    • Click on the Symbology tab in the Layer Properties window.
    • Click on Categories, and then click Match to symbols in a style.
    • Use the pull down menu under the Value Field and select POINTTYP or LINETYPE.
    • Use the pull down menu under Match Symbols in a Style and select NRCS Toolkit MD.style.
    • Click the Match Symbols Button and click Ok.

*Creating additional Resource Inventory Layers of the same feature type.

As a rule, you should create only one Resource Inventory Layer for each feature type (point, line or polygon). Unique features can be part of the same layer, but they should be given different attributes and symbology. For example, streams, fences, and existing pipeline can all be digitized in the same Resource Inventory layer. However, in certain circumstances, you may need to create a second layer of the same type.

  • Click on the New Toolkit Layer button ("Star").
  • Click on a Resource Inventory feature type (point, line or polygon).
  • Next to Layer Name, type a new name for the feature.
  • Next to File Name, replace the text res_inv with text similar to the layer name. Click Ok.
