NRCS Soils Staff Conduct Tour for World Soils Conference

Maryland Media Liaison:

Carol Hollingsworth, 443-482-2902

As part of NRCS’ ongoing cooperation with the University of Maryland Experiment Station in College Park, NRCS soils staff in Maryland and Delaware were asked to help develop and host a pre-conference tour throughout Delmarva and Southern Maryland for the 18th World Congress of Soil Science.  The tour specifically looked at acid sulfate soils found in tidal marshes throughout Delmarva, subaqueous soils from the Delaware Inland Bays and glauconitic bearing soils of Southern Maryland.  Specifically, the NRCS Soil Scientists assisted by selecting sites, sampling soils for lab analysis, writing articles for the tour guidebook and by guiding and leading discussion out at the sites during the tour.  The soil scientists that were involved were Phil King, Jim Brewer, Charlie Hanner, Susan Davis, Eddie Earles and David Verdone.

The tour, conducted on July 7 and 8, 2006, was attended by 45 research and university people from all over the world that were attending the 18th World Congress of Soil Science.  USDA- NRCS is one of two major sponsors for the international conference that was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
