MD.360.9.9, PER - Fiscal Year 2009 Maryland Mentoring ProgramMaryland Bulletin: 360-9-9 Purpose. To announce the sign-up period for the Maryland Mentoring Program. Expiration Date. September 30, 2009. ACTION REQUIRED BY: AUGUST 1, 2009 Action Required: All Maryland NRCS Employees interested in participating in the Maryland Mentoring Program as either Protégés or Mentors need to sign-up by August 1, 2009. For information on the program, go to: http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/intranet/HRMD/Human_Capital/welcome.htm Background. NRCS is experiencing increased turnover among new employees. Research has shown that employees stay in organizations where they feel connected. Mentoring is one way new employees can get “connected.” A successful Mentoring Program can also facilitate the transfer of institutional knowledge to the next generation. The costs of employee turnover and lost institutional knowledge far exceed the investment in mentoring for NRCS employees. Explanation. Applications for the Maryland Mentoring Program will open on July 23, 2009. The Maryland Mentoring Program is a one-year formal program. People who are interested in being either a protégé or a mentor will apply on-line at https://www.nrcsmentoring.com/. This is a continuous sign-up with the first round of applications closing August 1, 2009. All employees are eligible to apply. As part of the application process an electronic message will be sent to the employee’s supervisor for approval of the employees’ participation in the program. After an employee has been approved for participation, they will complete a work-style assessment. After all applications are received, the protégés will be matched with a mentor. If there are not enough mentors, people who are not paired with a mentor will be given priority in the next class. All mentors will be required to attend a half day morning training session. The protégés will attend a half day afternoon session on the same day. The mentors will join the protégés during the afternoon session. As part of the orientation, the mentoring pairs will complete a mentoring agreement which will define their expectations for their one-year mentoring partnership. After the orientation, most communication between the protégé and mentor will be by phone, email or the regularly scheduled meetings. The Maryland Mentoring Committee is utilizing materials from the NRCS National Mentoring Framework to implement the Maryland program.
