MD.450.8.3, TCH - Review of Draft Conservation Practice Standards

Maryland Bulletin: 450-8-3
Subject: TCH - Review of Draft Conservation Practice Standards
Date: June 24, 2008

Action Required By: July 28, 2008

Purpose. To request comments on four draft conservation practice standards.

Expiration Date. September 30, 2008.

Explanation.

We periodically review and revise our Maryland conservation practice standards to maintain consistency with updated national standards. The following drafts are updates of previously issued Maryland standards:

  • Agrichemical Handling Facility (Code 309) – This is a revision of the old Interim Maryland Conservation Practice Standard, Agrichemical Mixing Facility (Code 702). There have been many minor changes throughout the document in order to align more with the National Standard.
  • Field Border (Code 386) – Additional criteria have been added for erosion control, water quality, managing pest populations, carbon storage, and air quality.
  • Heavy Use Area Protection (Code 561) - This is the second draft of this standard. Due to comments received for the first draft, this standard has had substantial changes throughout.

The following draft is a new standard for Maryland:

  • Early Successional Habitat Development/Management (Code 647) - This is a practice that can be used to specify prescribed burning, disking, overseeding, herbicide treatment, and non-commercial tree thinning, when these activities are conducted for wildlife habitat management purposes.

An electronic copy of each standard will be available for downloading from the eFOTG through my.NRCS or http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/efotg/. Select Maryland and select a county. The draft standards will be displayed in the main window under “What’s Recently Changed” and “Draft eFOTG.”
