MD.260.8.1, INF - Fall 2007 Land Judging Contest

Maryland Bulletin: 260-8-1
Subject: INF - Fall 2007 Land Judging Contest
Date: October 3, 2007

Purpose. To announce the date of the State Land Judging Contest and "soils" training opportunity.

Expiration Date. September 30, 2008.

Explanation.  The 2007 State (FFA) Land Judging Contest is scheduled for Friday, October 19, 2007. The contest will be held on piedmont soils in Howard County. The precise location and host school will be announced at a later date.  All FFA Chapters are encouraged to participate, and second teams are welcome for training purposes. Also, any 4-H Club or envirothon teams are welcome to attend. The State Contest event consists of a "land judging school" from 9:00-11:00 am and a contest from 11:30 - 1:00 pm. The contest will be conducted according to "A Guide to Land Judging in Maryland," Coop. Ext. Bulletin 232, Rev. 1985-86.

No formal Regional Contests are scheduled this year due to conflicts with other student activities, lack of funding for substitute teachers and low participation in the past. However, NRCS soil scientists will be available, as scheduling permits, to provide informal training to individual teams. We anticipate these sessions to be 2 hours in length. Soil profile excavations are the responsibility of the school; otherwise, hand auger observations will be used.

District Conservationists are encouraged to contact local FFA Chapters and schedule training, if they so desire. In addition, consider contacting envirothon teams that may be interested in participating in local training sessions and/or the State Contest.

Contact. If there are any questions or any employees are interested in the above training opportunities, please contact Joe Kraft at 301-695-2903, ext. 3, Carl Robinette at 301-777-1494, ext. 3, or Jim Brewer at 410-822-1577, ext. 3.
