Subject: FY08 First Quarter Outreach Activities

Date: January 4, 2008

Worcester County

  • Conservation Program presentations at four separate public meetings within the county with a total of 193 attendees at these events

Baltimore County

  • Presented information on conservation programs and technical assistance at four pasture seminars. Participants consisted of small part-time farmers raising non-traditional livestock and horses. A total of 75 participated.

Garrett County

  • Presented NRCS information to the Maryland Agricultural Leadership (LEAD Maryland) program. Approximately 30 were in attendance.
  • Presented information on nutrient management and grazing at a Cooperative Extension meeting. Approximately 30 were in attendance.

Montgomery County

  • Presentation of CSP and EQIP participation requirements at winter Agronomy meeting. Approximately 40 in attendance.
  • Presentation of NRCS activities at annual cooperators meeting with 130 in attendance.
  • Presented NRCS information at an Equine Twilight Tour to approximately 30 horse owners.
  • Articles are prepared and included in the Conservation District newsletter. Approximately 1,000 were distributed this quarter.

Wicomico County

  • Continued assistance to a minority community to address drainage issues. Utilizing RC&D to identify financial assistance.
  • Working closely with an Asian realtor to assist with Asian-owned poultry producers.  This assistance is also being made available in Worcester and Somerset Counties.

Carroll County

  • Led the Fall Farm Tour of Conservation Practices with elected officials and conservation district officials. Over 50 participated.
  • Presented NRCS information at the World Horse Expo held in Baltimore. This was in cooperation with Maryland Cooperative Extension and the Montgomery Soil Conservation District. Presented to at least 80 participants.
  • Presentation was made to the Carroll County Department of Environmental Protection and Water Resources on technical and financial assistance available from NRCS and the SCD.

Cecil County

  • Manned a display at the Cecil County Fair.
  • Provided NRCS information at the County Agricultural Showcase. Approximately 75 attendees.
  • Provided information on NRCS programs at the Maryland Cooperative Extension Winter Ag Update to 50 farmers.
  • Presented NRCS information at the Sheeler's Winter Crop Meeting to 100 attendees.
  • Submit articles to the quarterly SCD newsletter.
  • Provide information for the Conservation District's website.
  • Review NRCS program activities at the SCD annual meeting. Over 250 attendees.
  • Prepare and man a display a the Way Family Farm Day. Over 200 attendees.
  • Present NRCS information at the 4-H Outreach Day with 150 attendees.

Prince George's County

  • Presented NRCS financial and technical assistance information to a group of 15 minority landowners at an event organized by the Maryland Small Farm Assistance program.

Maryland State Office

  • Prepared a display for the annual Small Farm Conference in cooperation with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Approximately 60 attendees with 55% identified as minority landowners.
  • Submitted three guest articles to the DelMarva Farm on farm programs, grazing and precision agriculture.
  • Provided two full page advertisements in the DelMarva Farmer announcing 2008 Conservation Program application and financial assistance availability.
